Eco-art internship & Mentorship Program

Target audience: primary and secondary school students

Start date: May 2012 (started at Evergreen Brick Works – TREC Kids’ World of Energy Festival)

Purpose:  Increase awareness and eco-literacy skills in primary and secondary school students in Ontario.

Goals/objectives

• Enable students to passionately use various creative medium as a forum and means to express their concerns about the environment and sustainability;
• Teach students ways that they can creatively explore issues within their communities that concern them, and potential solutions to these challenges;
• Develop eco-literacy skills and understand the breadth and scope of the environmental crisis today;
• Provide students with eco-art/studio skills and methods to reduce their ecological footprint; and
• Coach students to be community and environmental stewards.

Through the eco-art leadership program, students receive mentoring and coaching to help them in their artistic practice both inside and outside the studio.   Students learn to become leaders in the emerging field of eco-art; as stewards of both their eco-art practice and environmental sustainability and conservation within their community, they can contribute to eco-design, planning, sustainability, conservation, climate change mitigation and adaptation within their own community.

A Centre for Eco-Art and Green Innovation will provide these students with support in their eco-art practice, and serve as a creativity hub and incubator for creative solutions to environmental issues/challenges facing York Region.  The Centre will be located within Newmarket, ON, and will operate as both an artist-run Gallery and a not-for-profit.

These interactive and fun workshops are one of ART on the Go’s many workshops which include: Acrylic painting, mixed media, water color painting, oil and soft pastel and garbage art. ART on the Go provided some fun and innovative art activities at this event, including allowing children to explore their vision of a Sustainable City; and providing participants with a creative outlet to express their feelings and experiences of Nature in their own community.
